What is the creator economy?

The creator economy is the network of creatives, writers, coaches, influencers, and more who want to earn a living online. They use software and social media to share their perspectives, build an audience, and sell products and services.

Being a creator certainly isn’t a new concept, and some full-time creators have been building an audience for over a decade. But a surge in new creators due to the COVID-19 pandemic has brought extra attention to the creator economy.

But the problem is, most writeups about the creator economy focus on what these shifts mean for marketers or big businesses that want to work with creators to grow their company instead of focusing on the true heroes — the creators.

So that’s exactly what we did.

It was time to put the focus of the creator economy right back on the creators.

We ran a survey in early 2022 to hear directly from creators about how they go about their daily lives and build their businesses.

They are the driving force, the power and muscle, and the creativity and beauty that make this lifestyle a reality. It’s been born on their grit, daring, and free-fall leaps into the unknown with only a high-hopes dream and a “keep going” mantra to help them cycle through the ups and downs.

These creators are the ones who deserve to show off their hard work and tell their own story of where this economy has been and where they want it to go next.

So who are the creators of 2022 and what have they been up to?

We wanted to know who these creators are, how they make money, and their plans for the coming year. So we asked them.

This review of the Creator Economy in 2022 is the culmination of 2,704 creators sharing their experiences. Together, these creators bring over 11,000 years of combined audience-building expertise and $66 million in 2021 earnings.

They’ve shown us that the creator economy is vast and ready to grow.
